Across Centuries

14 October - 18 October 2004

The Most Serene Republic lasted for over a thousand years and was finally destroyed by Napoleon in 1797. Ten years later he made his only visit to the city arriving on the miserable wet and cold Sunday evening of November 29th 1807.

However, we expect the weather to be much more pleasant for this special tour which has been arranged in association with Grapeshot; your hosts will be Mike and Ann Hannon.

The foremost authority on the history of Venice, John Julius Norwich, will accompany the tour for the first three days, a unique opportunity to learn of the city's history, see the beauty that her power and wealth made possible, and appreciate the truth of the introduction to A History of Venice; 'However majestic the churches, however magnificent the palazzo, however dazzling the pictures, the ultimate masterpiece remains Venice herself'. You will learn and be entertained by his after dinner talks, talk to him as we walk around the city and chat over drinks and meals. Inevitably, the programme includes a considerable amount of walking through narrow streets. Keeling the party together so that everyone benefits from the commentary can be a challenge, so we have reluctantly limited the group to 25 and everyone needs to be fairly fit.
